Safety Tips for the Next Winter Storm and Power Outage in New Jersey

The next time a winter storm hits in NJ and we experience a power outage, you do not want to be caught unprepared. Heavy snow, strong winds, icing, and dangerously low temperatures can impact your heat, electricity, and communications. A power outage could last for days at a time. Protect your family from the dangers of winter weather by planning ahead. You should do the following to stay safe before, during, and after a power outage from a winter storm in New Jersey.

Before the Storm Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup are important to have throughout your home. Batteries should be checked twice a year.

As a winter storm approaches and it looks like a power outage may be possible, it is important to be alert to changing conditions. Keep track of the latest information from the National Weather Service through a NOAA Weather Radio or your local media.

Stay off the roads. If this is not an option, pack emergency supplies in your car. At home, build a winter weather kit with the following items:

  • Sufficient clothing and blankets to stay warm
  • Snow removal equipment, including shovels and rock salt
  • Heat supply, such as a space heater or seasoned wood for your fireplace
  • Adequate water, non-perishable food items, medication, toiletries, and pet supplies for several days without electricity or safe travel conditions
  • Flashlights for each member of your family

Through the Storm Stay indoors during a winter storm. If you need to go outside, walk carefully and avoid overexertion when shoveling. Keep dry and watch for signs of frostbite (loss of feeling and pale appearance in extremities) and hypothermia (shivering, disorientation and slurred speech). Seek medical help immediately if symptoms are detected.

If you lose heat, prevent your pipes from freezing by allowing faucets to drip slowly and opening cabinet doors beneath sinks to let warm air in. In the event your pipes do freeze, open all faucets completely and apply heat to the frozen pipe area with a blow dryer or by placing an electric heater in the room (making sure it is away from flammable materials). Do not use torches or open flames to defrost pipes.

After the Storm Following a winter storm in New Jersey, the American Red Cross and local media can provide you with a list of shelters in your area should you need one. Proceed outside with caution, staying away from tree limbs and downed wires that may be out of view. Contact a tree or yard company to handle damaged trees, and alert your electric company immediately to downed wires. Stay warm and continue to monitor for signs of overexertion, hypothermia, and frostbite.
